A study to assess the knowledge regarding human rights and legal responsibilities of  the mentally ill among students studying in selected nursing colleges at Mysuru

ABSTRACT:

A descriptive study was conducted to assess the knowledge questionnaire regarding human rights and legal responsibilities of mentally ill among students. Data was collected by administering structured knowledge questionnaire regarding human rights and legal responsibilities of mentally ill. The study was conducted at JSS College of Nursing, JSS School of Nursing, Mysuru among 60 III year BSc nursing  and GNM III year students who were selected by using non probability convenience sampling technique. The study result revealed that 70% of nursing students had average knowledge, 21.6% had poor knowledge and 8.4% had good knowledge among students.

INTRODUCTION:

Since the origin of human civilization, mentally ill patients have received the scant amount of care and concern of the community. For centuries, as a result of this the rights of mentally ill have been abused and ignored. The students must know the rights of a mentally ill person; and should support and protect them in their liberty and treatment needs, applicable requirements. 1

 

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

A study to assess the knowledge regarding human rights and legal responsibilities of  the mentally ill among students studying in selected nursing institution at Mysuru.

 

OBJECTIVES:

1)     To assess the knowledge regarding human rights and legal responsibilities of the mentally ill among students.

2)     To find the association between knowledge regarding human rights and legal responsibilities of the mentally ill and students selected personal Variables.

 

NEED FOR THE STUDY:

According to the World Health Organization Report, 450 million people in world suffer from mental or behavioral disorder but only small minorities of them receive even the most basic treatment. Mental disorders affects 5 crore of the Indian population (5%) and they need special care. 80% of districts in India do not have even one psychiatrist in public service.2

A descriptive survey was conducted to assess the knowledge regarding human rights of mentally ill in Krishna Institute of Nursing Sciences, Karad. In this study, sample consists of 33 Post Basic B. Sc. Nursing students .Non probability convenient sampling technique was used to select the samples. Data was collected by administering structured knowledge questionnaire regarding human rights of mentally ill. The study results shows that 70% of the nursing students had average knowledge and 21.6% had poor knowledge regarding human rights of mentally ill and there was no significant association between knowledge regarding human rights of mentally ill with their selected demographic variables.

 

HYPOTHESIS:

H1:  there will be significant association between student’s knowledge regarding human rights and legal responsibilities of the mentally ill and students selected personal variables.

 

METHODOLOGY:

Descriptive study was used for the present study. Data was collected by administering structured knowledge questionnaire regarding human rights and legal responsibilities of mentally ill. The study was conducted at JSS College of Nursing, Mysuru among 60 III year BSc and II year GNM nursing students who were selected by using non probability convenience sampling technique and data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.

 

RESULTS:

Section 1: Demographic variables of students

93.7% of students belonged to the age group of 20 years and above and 6.6% belonged to less than 19 years of age. Out of 60 students 85% of students were female and 15% were male respectively.

Mean knowledge scores regarding human rights and legal responsibilities of the  mentally ill among students was 14.4 with the standard deviation of ± 4.5.

The finding reveals that 70% of nursing students had average knowledge, 21.6% had poor knowledge and 8.4% had good knowledge among students.

 

The study also revealed that there was no significant association between knowledge regarding human rights and legal responsibilities of  the mentally ill among students with their selected personal variables.

 

CONCLUSION:

Study concludes that students have to educated and trained regarding human rights and legal responsibilities of the mentally ill, thereby it can help to protect the patients’ rights and safeguard them legally.
